Alternative Delivery Methods

The traditional style of designing and constructing projects has been Design-Bid-Build, which required an engineer to design (prepare the construction documents), the agency to advertise the project and solicit bids from contractors, and finally the contactor builds the project. Alternative delivery methods such as Design/Build and Construction Manager @ Risk (CM@Risk) are gaining momentum that allow public agencies to accelerate the construction of a project or have more control in the selection of the contractor.

SWTE is familiar, and experienced, with both delivery methods. Members of our staff were involved with two of largest Design/Builds projects for the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) – US 60 and SR 51, I-10 to Shea Boulevard Design/Build projects.

Through the fall of 2007, SWTE has been involved in over ten CM@Risk projects for agencies such as the City of Chandler, City of Goodyear, Town of Fountain Hills, City of Mesa, Town of Gilbert, and City of Surprise. We are currently part of the design oversight team for ADOT’s first CM@Risk project along US 89 in Chino Valley.
